How we enjoyed Toledo, Ohio. Traveling is such a vital part of our lives. Only 25% of US workers take all the vacation that they are entitled to. Come on, people – use your vacation days! For Spring Break this year we broke out of the norm and decided to go somewhere new. I searched around our area and found some locations closer to home that offered activities we enjoyed doing. Toledo, Ohio was on the way to our final destination. I didn’t realize when I booked a few nights how much we would enjoy the area and want to stay longer.
On our first day we visited the Toledo Zoo. Now, I wrote a full review on them but I still want to mention a few vital points in case you missed that post. First up it is HUGE! Plan a head to be there for a good day. Actually we could spend more than one day because there is so much t see, do, experience, touch and feed!
Second, they rescue and rehabilitate many of the animals. So, the exhibits are constantly changing as new animals come in and others return to the wild healed. I found this to be such a great educational program for our son and something I could really get behind as a patron!
After the Zoo we ventured to the Imagination Station.
I should just point out do these on separate days! My son loves Science and we wished we had spread these two things out. After walking the Zoo going to this activity was rushed more than we would have liked. They have some great hands on Science stations for adults, teens and smaller children to participate in. Ride the high wire bike and do the BOYO (human yo-yo). I can’t wait to go back and enjoy the new dinosaur exhibit coming in!
While downtown you can also check out the National Museum of the Great Lakes and the Toledo Museum of Art. We love reading about the History of a place and supporting the Arts. I wish we had scheduled more time to truly spend more time at these locations. Luckily, it only reinforced our decision to come back and explore Toledo further.
Once you have explore, learned and walked around Toledo nourishment is needed! We found a great famous local restaurant to feast our bodies, Tony Packo. You are probably wondering why there is a sign “hot dog bun” picture above. Because they have famous celebrities, movie stars and politicians come and sign buns.
It started back when they hosted shows in town and the stars would come to eat afterwards. They started signing hot dog buns and have added to the walls ever since! Curious about the food? Well, come HUNGRY I mean VERY hungry. These Hungarian dishes hit you with so much flavor you can tell they are homemade. The staff is friendly and perfect for any occasion!
My son wanted to point out they even have a “bun” signed by Santa Claus. Seriously, a great place to take anyone both for the food and decor.
Where should you stay if you are in the area? We stayed at the Radisson at the University of Toledo Medical Center. It was just outside f the city area perfect to travel to different activities we had planned. I love family friendly establishments and the pricing is very affordable for many budgets!
